New Orleans St. John of the Cross House of Studies
Located
on the campus of Notre Dame Seminary, the St. John of the Cross
House of Studies serves as the formation community for the Carmelite
seminarians of our province. These seminarians complete their
theological studies at Notre Dame Seminary as they grow in their
commitment to the Carmelite way of life and receive training for
future ministry. The community also ministers to the Discalced
Carmelite Nuns and Secular Carmelites of the area and currently
serves as the residence of our provincial superior.
History:
In the chapter of 1993, the Province made the decision to send
our theology students to Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. The
St. John of the Cross House of Studies is a building on the grounds
of the Seminary. It was originally built as a convent for the
congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family, who did domestic
work at the Seminary. The building has also served as a house
of discernment, a residence for men considering a vocation to
the priesthood.
